There is no single answer, because it depends on how much time you study, what your goal is, and whether you already speak a related language. With regular lessons and some practice between them, most students can hold simple everyday conversations within a few months, while reading and writing comfortably — and reaching a professional working level — takes longer, often a year or more of steady study. The most important factor is consistency: a little Persian every week beats a burst of study followed by a long break.
The DLPT (Defense Language Proficiency Test) measures listening and reading: how well you understand spoken and written Persian. The OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) measures speaking: it is a live conversation with an interviewer. Many students prepare for both, since the two tests measure different skills, and my lessons can focus on either one or on both together.
No. Many students start with zero knowledge of the alphabet, and that is completely fine. We learn the alphabet step by step in the early lessons, and I also have a free Persian Alphabet video series on my YouTube channel, "Persian Language, Culture & Music," which you can watch alongside your lessons. You will be reading simple words sooner than you expect.
Yes — for language learning, online lessons work very well, because the lesson itself is a conversation. My lessons are online only, so you can study from anywhere, and we use the full lesson time for speaking, listening, reading, and questions. Many of my students are busy professionals and service members, and online lessons fit their schedules.
One term is four one-hour sessions, and the cost is $80 per term, paid in advance via Venmo (@shadi-davarzani). Lessons are private and built around your level and goals, whether that is everyday conversation, DLPT or OPI preparation, or reading and writing. You can continue term after term as your Persian grows.
Visit the "Book & Pay for Lessons" section on www.shadi-davarzani.com to reserve your term and pay securely with Venmo. We will begin by talking about your goals and your current level — even if that level is "complete beginner" — and build your learning plan from there. No previous knowledge of Persian is needed to start.
Yes, if you study regularly. Language learning is a skill, and like any skill it grows with practice. My teaching focuses on the system behind the language, so you learn how Persian works — not just phrases to memorize — and that means you can build new sentences yourself, not only repeat the ones you have been taught. Progress takes time, and no result can be guaranteed, but students who keep showing up do learn to speak, read, and understand Persian.
